RICHMOND WATER POLO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
(Last updated: October 2024)
1. How can I get more information about joining Richmond Water Polo Club?
We welcome new players of all ages! Please contact our Club Registrar at here to express your interest. You're also welcome to attend a free trial session to experience the sport and our club firsthand.
2. Do players need prior water polo experience to join?
No prior experience is necessary! We offer teams across junior grades (U12s to U18s) in both boys’ and girls’ divisions, as well as multiple divisions in the Women’s and Men’s State League.
Our junior program is one of the most successful in Victoria, with a strong focus on skill development, teamwork, and fun. Alongside competition teams and weekly training, we run holiday training camps to support new players.
New players can also "train on" with their age group and prepare to play when they feel ready, in consultation with their coach. We also offer a Flippa Ball program for players aged 7+ to assist with the transition into competition teams.
3. Is it possible to start playing straight away?
Before each season, teams are formed based on registered players. During the season, some teams may have spots available for new players. If so, you may be able to join a team immediately.
If teams are full, you can participate in training sessions to develop your skills and get to know players and coaches in preparation for the next season. Our Club Registrar can assist you with these options.
4. What is the difference between Richmond Water Polo Club and Water Polo Victoria?
Richmond Water Polo Club is an incorporated association that enters teams into competitions run by Water Polo Victoria, the governing body for the sport in the state. You can learn more about their programs on the Water Polo Victoria website.
5. What ages can play water polo?
Water polo is a sport for life! We offer programs for players aged 7 years to seniors, with some of our oldest members in their 70s. Junior programs focus on building skills and a love for the game, while senior programs provide competitive opportunities.
6. How long is the season?
The length of the season depends on Water Polo Victoria’s policies. Junior seasons usually align with school terms, with breaks during holidays. For example, the 2024-25 Junior Summer season runs from October 2024 to March 2025, and the 2024 Senior season runs from July to December.
We also host the Richmond Cup, an invitational competition for senior members, which will next be held in Term 2, 2025.
7. What equipment is needed to play?
Players need to purchase Club Tiger bathers (available via our store on Team App), which can take up to four weeks to arrive. A mouthguard is also required. The Club provides caps and balls, and optional merchandise like Club hoodies and hats can be purchased from our store.
8. Where are games played?
Games are organised by Water Polo Victoria, with most played at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC). Other venues include Hawthorn Aquatic Centre and Melbourne High School. Senior games may also be held at Caulfield Grammar School.
Our junior teams also compete in state and national tournaments, often held in places like Geelong, Ballarat, Perth, or Brisbane.
9. Where do teams train?
We train at several Melbourne pools, with Caulfield Grammar School as our main venue. Additional sessions may be held at Mentone Girls’ Grammar or Melbourne High School, depending on the schedule.
10. When and how often do teams train?
Training schedules are available on our website. Junior teams (U12-U18) typically train 1-2 times per week for 1-1.5 hours, with more frequent sessions leading up to key tournaments. Senior teams train similarly, with higher divisions usually training twice a week.
11. Is attendance at training mandatory?
While we understand that players have other commitments, regular training attendance is important for team success and individual improvement. Please inform your Coach or Team Manager if you’re unable to attend.
Attendance is recorded, and consistent participation may impact selection for tournaments and finals, in line with our Fair Play Fair Go Policy and Water Polo Victoria's rules.
12. Can I train more if I want to?
Yes! Speak to your coach about additional training opportunities. Some players may be invited to train with other teams, and swimming outside of water polo training is an excellent way to improve.
13. How are training schedules determined?
Schedules are based on factors such as pool availability, coach availability, player workload, and costs. The Club strives to balance these factors to optimise training sessions. Please check for updates, as schedules may change due to unforeseen circumstances.
14. When are games played?
Junior games are typically held on Sundays, usually in the morning or early afternoon. Senior women’s games are on Tuesdays, while men’s games are on Wednesdays or Thursdays. For specific dates and times, visit the Water Polo Victoria website.
15. How are fees determined?
Fees are reviewed annually and based on pool hire, coaching costs, team entries, and other expenses. For more detailed information, please contact the Club.
16. How can I get involved if I’m not playing?
Volunteering is a great way to contribute! You can join the Committee, become a Team Manager, help with fundraisers, or support Club events. You can also assist with table duty (scorekeeping and timing) or even qualify as a referee.
17. What representative opportunities are available?
Richmond Water Polo Club has a proud history of players advancing to state and national teams, including Olympians. Many juniors are selected for the National Age Group Program (NAGP) each year.
