RICHMOND CUP GRAND FINALS
The inaugural season of the Richmond Cup has concluded with two exciting grand finals.
The men’s competition wrapped up on Sunday, beginning with the minor final where the Jaguars faced off against the Leopards. It was a fierce contest, but the Jaguars emerged victorious with a convincing 30-14 win.
The grand final followed, featuring a showdown between the Panthers and the Wildcats. It was a tightly contested game for much of the match. Late in the fourth quarter, it appeared the Panthers had secured the win. However, a late surge by the Wildcats brought a new level of excitement, resulting in an 18-18 tie at the final siren. The match moved into extra time with a golden goal needed to determine the winner. The Wildcats had the first possession but failed to convert, giving the Panthers the chance to secure victory, which they did.
The final score was Panthers 19, Wildcats 18.
The winning captain Amir A was presented the Richmond Cup Trophy by dual Olympian Ian Mills.
It was a thrilling conclusion to a fantastic competition.
The women’s Richmond Cup concluded on Tuesday with the combined Sabers and Sumatrans taking on the Bengals. Both teams played a hard-fought match with bragging rights on the line. The Bengals led for most of the game, but the Sabers and Sumatrans made a strong comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring 3-0. However, it wasn’t enough to clinch the title, and the Bengals won 10-6.
Triple Olympian Rowie Webster presented the trophy to the winning team.
